If you’re reading this, there’s a pretty good chance you’re either new to the online printables scene or you’re a seasoned designer who’s looking for some insight. Either way, I’m here to share my advice and some helpful tips I’ve learned over the past 7+ years that I’ve been in the business.
The overarching theme of this blog and my number one tip I would give to every single printable designer out there today is to “JUST BE YOU”
Listen, I get it. I’m sure you’re reading that thinking that statement is totally basic and overrated, but it’s soooo much deeper than a quote you read on a notebook, it’s absolutely true and honestly is the way you get ahead in this business that is growing every single day.
When I say this, I’m not saying to completely stay away from trends. Following the current trends is good, it will keep you relevant and generate sales, but it is very important that you do them in your own unique way rather than just copying others. These days I find that everyone is on the copy train and just looking for a way to make a quick buck. (Just search a popular birthday party theme like “One Cool Dude” and see how many *almost* identical printable designs come up!) Think about it… if you don’t want someone else copying and using your work, why would you use someone else’s? Here is what’s wrong with that: if you are copying, people will notice and, ultimately, it will endanger your business rather than put you ahead.
3 Reasons Why Authenticity Matters:
1. Building Trust with Your Customers
When you create original content, it resonates more with your audience. People are drawn to authenticity and they can tell when something is genuinely you. This builds trust. And a trustworthy brand is a successful brand. Your unique voice and style are what will make customers come back every time.
2. Standing Out in The Crowd
The digital printables market is saturated with talented designers. While that’s a great thing for buyers, it can be hard to find your place in the market. To stand out, you need to offer something that no one else does. This makes your individuality is your greatest asset. By injecting your personality and unique perspective into your designs, you create a distinct brand identity that sets you apart from the competition.
3. Fostering Creativity and Innovation
Copying others smothers your creativity. When you focus on being yourself, you open up your mind to endless possibilities. Innovation happens when you experiment with your own ideas rather than following in someone else’s footsteps. This not only makes your work more fulfilling, but also positions you as a trendsetter in the industry.
4 Steps to Embracing Your Uniqueness:
1. Identify Your Strengths and Passions
First, ask yourself these two questions: What are you passionate about? What are your strengths? By focusing on what you love and what you’re good at, you naturally create work that is unique to you. This passion and expertise will shine through in your designs, making them more attractive to your audience.
2. Find Inspiration
It’s okay to be inspired by others, but focus on using that inspiration as a jumping off board to develop your own ideas. Combine different elements you love in a way that reflects your style. This way, you create something new and exciting rather than a replica of someone else’s work.
3. Share Your Story
People connect with stories. Use your social media channels to share your journey, your process and the inspiration behind your designs. This not only humanizes your brand, but also creates a deeper connection with your audience. They’re not just buying a product; they’re buying a piece of your story. (I am personally working on this one, one day at a time.)
4. Stay True to Your Values
Your values are the core of your brand. Whether its sustainability, quality or creativity, make sure everything you produce aligns with your values. This consistency strengthens your brand identity and builds loyalty among your customers.
Overcoming the Fear of Being Different
It’s natural to feel apprehensive about standing out, especially in a competitive market like the online printable business. However I’ve found that the risk is soooo worth the reward. When you embrace your uniqueness, you attract a loyal audience who appreciates you for who you are. Remember, it’s better to have a small and dedicated following than a large, indifferent one.
Final Thoughts
In the world of online printables, being yourself is not just good advice—it’s actually essential for success. Ultimately, by doing this, you build trust, stand out from the crowd and encourage creativity in your own work. By focusing on your strengths, taking inspiration without imitation, sharing your story and staying true to your values, you can create a thriving business that you can be proud to say is uniquely yours.
So, the next time you sit down to create, remember: JUST BE YOU. It’s the best way to ensure your work shines in a crowded market and keeps your audience coming back for more. Let’s do this together!
